The question we hear most often at our specialist orthodontics clinic is a simple one: which is better — Invisalign or braces? It is a fair question, and it deserves a frank answer rather than a sales pitch. The truth is that for many patients, both work equally well. For others, one is clearly the better clinical choice. Here is how we approach that decision at the Institute of Specialist and Cosmetic Dentistry (ISCD).
What is the fundamental difference between Invisalign and fixed braces?
Invisalign uses a series of removable, transparent plastic aligners — changed every one to two weeks — to gradually shift teeth, while fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded to tooth surfaces and connected by an archwire that applies continuous, precisely controlled force.
The distinction matters clinically. Fixed braces apply force continuously and in three dimensions — including rotational and torque movements — with a degree of control that current aligner systems cannot fully replicate in all cases. Invisalign, meanwhile, excels at segmented tooth movement, works without the dietary restrictions of fixed appliances, and offers significant aesthetic advantages throughout treatment.
Neither system is inherently superior. The right choice depends on the clinical problem being solved.
Which option produces better clinical outcomes?
For mild to moderate cases, peer-reviewed evidence shows no statistically significant difference in outcomes between clear aligners and fixed braces — but for complex presentations, fixed appliances retain important advantages in three-dimensional control.
A systematic review published in BMC Oral Health (Ke, Zhu & Zhu, 2019; PMC6343314) analysed eight studies involving 706 participants and found no statistically significant difference in treatment outcomes between clear aligner and fixed appliance therapies for mild to moderate malocclusion. The same review identified where fixed braces outperform aligners: controlling torque, achieving transverse expansion, and obtaining precise occlusal contacts.
For referring dentists: patients with mild crowding, spacing, or tooth rotation of mild-to-moderate severity are excellent candidates for clear aligner therapy. Cases involving skeletal discrepancies, significant overbite correction, or complex multi-tooth movements are better served by fixed appliances or a combination approach. We are happy to advise informally before referral.
How do treatment times compare in practice?
Clear aligner treatment averages 6.31 months shorter than fixed brace treatment for comparable cases — but that advantage depends entirely on the patient wearing aligners for the prescribed minimum of 22 hours per day.
The BMC Oral Health systematic review quantified this difference precisely: clear aligners completed treatment an average of 6.31 months faster than fixed braces for comparable cases. In practical terms, a patient who might spend 18 months in fixed braces could achieve similar results in 12 months with clear aligners — provided compliance is maintained consistently.
Compliance is the variable most likely to extend Invisalign treatment beyond the estimated timeline. Unlike fixed braces — which work continuously regardless of patient behaviour — clear aligners require disciplined daily wear. We discuss this frankly with every patient before treatment begins. For patients who are not confident they can maintain compliance, fixed braces may paradoxically deliver a faster result.
What are the day-to-day differences patients notice most?
The practical differences between Invisalign and fixed braces affect diet, oral hygiene, confidence, and comfort — and patients weight these factors very differently depending on their age, lifestyle, and how much they value discretion during treatment.
With Invisalign, aligners are removed for eating and drinking (other than water), so there are no dietary restrictions. Oral hygiene is straightforward — brush and floss normally, clean the aligners, and replace them. There are no brackets to catch food, no wires to break, and only mild discomfort for the first day or two of each new aligner.
Fixed braces require avoiding hard or sticky foods that can damage brackets or wires. Cleaning around brackets demands more time and technique — interdental brushes, floss threaders, and careful attention to the gumline. Emergency appointments for broken brackets or poking wires are occasionally needed.
On the other side: fixed braces require no willpower. They work around the clock without the patient having to remember to reinsert them after meals. For teenagers — or any patient who doubts their own compliance — this reliability is a genuine clinical advantage. You can read more about the full range of options in our guide to adult braces in Dublin.
When do we recommend fixed braces over Invisalign?
We recommend fixed braces when the clinical case requires three-dimensional tooth control that current aligner systems cannot reliably achieve, or when the patient’s circumstances make consistent aligner compliance unlikely.
Specific scenarios where fixed appliances are our preferred recommendation include:
- Significant overbite or overjet requiring controlled incisor torque
- Transverse arch discrepancies requiring expansion
- Cases where precise inter-arch coordination is essential
- Patients under 16 with developing dentitions
- Complex multi-tooth movements requiring continuous archwire mechanics
- Patients who have previously had unsuccessful aligner treatment
Many cases fall in the middle — where either option is clinically viable and the patient’s preference is the deciding factor. In those cases, we present both options with honest cost and timeline information and support the patient in making the decision that fits their life best.
What does each option cost at ISCD?
Invisalign at ISCD is €2,500 to €3,500 per case and fixed braces €1,250 to €3,500 per arch, with the exact figure depending on case complexity, with all costs confirmed in writing at your specialist consultation before any commitment is made.
Our specialist consultation fee is €150. At that appointment, Dr. O’Connell assesses your teeth, takes records, and provides a written treatment plan including full costs and a realistic timeline. There is no obligation to proceed, and there are no hidden charges.
In general terms, Invisalign for straightforward cases is priced comparably to ceramic fixed braces. Complex Invisalign cases involving attachments and refinement rounds can exceed the cost of equivalent fixed brace treatment. We explain this clearly up front so patients can make informed decisions.
A note for referring dentists
When referring patients to ISCD for orthodontic assessment, you do not need to pre-select the treatment modality — we assess the case in full, advise on the most appropriate option, and share our findings with you as the referring practitioner.
Our referral pathway is straightforward. A brief letter or secure email to info@iscd.ie with the patient’s name, date of birth, and a short clinical note is all that is needed. We contact the patient to schedule a specialist consultation and copy you on our assessment. For complex cases — particularly those involving combined ortho-restorative planning or jaw discrepancy — we welcome a phone call before referral to discuss the case informally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
For mild to moderate cases, research shows no statistically significant difference in clinical outcomes between Invisalign and fixed braces. For complex cases — including significant overcrowding or precise torque control — fixed braces remain the gold standard. A specialist orthodontist will advise which is clinically appropriate for your individual case.
How much does Invisalign cost compared to braces in Dublin?
At ISCD, Invisalign is €2,500 to €3,500 per case and fixed braces €1,250 to €3,500 per arch, varying by case complexity. Our specialist consultation (€150) includes a full assessment and written treatment plan with costs confirmed before you commit to anything.
How long does treatment take with Invisalign vs braces?
A systematic review found clear aligner treatment was on average 6.31 months shorter than fixed braces for comparable cases. Treatment time depends on complexity and — critically for Invisalign — on consistent daily wear for a minimum of 22 hours.
Can I switch from braces to Invisalign mid-treatment?
Switching mid-treatment is occasionally possible but not routinely recommended. It requires a full reassessment of tooth positions and adds both time and cost. Speak to your specialist orthodontist if you have concerns about your current appliance.
